Results Round Up From Pontarddulais, Amsterdam & Cardiff

Saturday 14th October at Cardiff saw round 1 of the cross country league for all age groups, incorporating the 1st round of the British Cross Challenge and also the West Wales Regional Championships. There was a great turnout from the club in most age groups, with many fine performances, medals won and selections made for the West Wales regional team, in what were hot and humid conditions for cross country. There were 11 races on the day, with big fields of runners from all clubs, with 4 to score for the juniors and 5 to score for the seniors our scoring runners in the league element of the day were:

U11B all 4 runners were making their Swansea Harriers debut appearances and did very well; first home was 81st Ethan Jones for the team, followed across the line by 87th Malachi Williams; 98th Joseph Pyke and 118th Ashton Davies. The team are 26th in the league after round 1.

U11G unfortunately we were unable to field a full team, with all the new club members this will surely change for round 2. First back was Kaitlyn Jones in 29th; next back was 63rd Neve Dodd and then brand new member making her debut 111th Lily-May Fermandel. The team placed 20th in the league.

U15B Charlie Holland had a superb run for 4th place and West Wales SILVER!, and was followed home by; 47th Logan Lambe; 56th Luka Smyth and 57th Miles Hill. The team are 10th in the league.

U15G Ashleigh Willis was in great form placing 2nd and West Wales GOLD!; as was Darcie Bass in 6th also winning West Wales BRONZE!; completing the team was 73rd Eve Bevan and 75th Mirain Lloyd. The team are 9th in the league.

U17M we were again just 1 runner short of a full team with 25th Dafydd Jay and just a few seconds behind 26th Martin Powell, and 55th William Arnold our 3rd runner. The team are 11th in the league.

U17W had a great turnout with 6 runners, with 3 finishing superbly in the top 10 and gaining a clean sweep of the West Wales medals! 5th Eluned King GOLD!; 8th Bronwen Stratton-Thomas SILVER!; 9th Mollie Jones BRONZE!; and our 4th scorer was 13th Beth Thomas. As a result the team are in a podium position in 2nd in the league table.

U20M once again we were just 1 runner short of a full team, however just like the U17W there was a clean sweep of the West Wales medals!; with first home having a great run for 5th Dominic Smith GOLD!; with 11th Elliot Lawrence SILVER! and 16th Sam Martin BRONZE!. The team are also placed in an excellent podium place of 3rd with just the 3 runners.

U20W we only had the one runner Cari Hughes but she had a superb run to win the league race and finish in SILVER medal position for the British Cross Challenge element of the day. Even though she was on her own her team (of 1) are placed 3rd in the league! Carys is a North Wales region athlete so was not eligible for a West medal.

SM our 5 scorers were; having a great run for 6th was Phil Matthews (East Wales); Guy Smith was just outside the top 10 in 11th and won West Wales GOLD!; Matthew Harvey was 14th winning West Wales SILVER! Crossing the line almost together were 39th James Dean and 40th Alex Price. The team are excellently placed in 2nd in Division 1.

SW our first runner home but whose name appears to be missing from the league results was SILVER medalist Verity Ockenden in the British Cross Challenge part of the day. Verity was followed home by well placed Sian Edwards in 6th; 10th Vicky Jackson; 23rd Helen Marshall  who won West Wales GOLD! and 37th Jemima Osborn to complete our 5 scorers. The team were superb setting the standard for all our teams to follow, having a clear lead at the top of division 1, and once the points are amended to include Verity this lead will be extended, congratulations to them all.

Our thanks to all the team managers in rounding up runners and we hope and are confident for an even bigger and better turnout in round 2 on Saturday 11th November at Brecon. Well done to all those who were at Cardiff outside of our scoring teams too. Incorporated into the races were round 1 of the British Cross Challenge series, where many of the UKs top endurance runners were in action, you can view those results here, at the time of posting they have not been merged with the league results, so it is a bit tricky to figure out exactly who finished where at this stage.

Sunday 15th October Caryl Jones was in Amsterdam making her marathon debut, and what a debut it was smashing the club record of (2.45.23) held by Ruth Pickavance since 2001 by around 11 minutes! Caryl placed 11th on the day in (2.34.12) and in the process also beat the 2018 Commonwealth Games A standard to be strongly considered for selection in Melbourne in 2018. The time was so quick Caryl is now ranked 3rd on the Welsh all time list. Congratulations!
