Level 1 UK Athletics Officials Courses In Track Judging & Timekeeping
The need for new volunteers to train and develop as officials is of vital importance to the future success for all levels of competition in Swansea Harriers. Help your club fulfil its officiating duties at home and away fixtures by attending the UK Athletics Level 1 Officials Qualifications at Swansea University:
- Level 1 Track Judges qualification, 6pm to 8pm Tuesday 27th May.
- Level 1 Timekeepers qualification, 5.45pm to 7.45pm, Tuesday 24th June.
£25pp (the club will refund you in full once you’ve completed the course and paperwork).
Anyone over the age of 16 can book onto the courses, who is interested in officiating the track events.
What sort of things will I learn on the courses?
- How to work as part of a team of track officials at athletics meetings and carry out the duties of a Track Judge/Umpire.
- Knowing what equipment, you need to have with you at athletics meetings to enable you to carry out your duties throughout the meeting.
- How to take finishing positions and how to report any racing incidents.
- How to take appropriate times accurately and understand some of the reasons for inaccuracy
- Understand how to report times to chief timekeeper
- This course covers all track events sprints, hurdles, Steeplechase, distance events and relay
- Understand what a Track Judge/Umpire should record in relation to what is seen without being influenced by anyone else.
- To have a basic knowledge of the track markings and particularly the finishing line (how to judge the finish) and lane lines.
- To carry out the basic duties such as – judging, lap board and bell, break line, relay take over judge, hurdle observation, umpiring for observing running out of lane or impeding other athletes and what these involve.

All of the modules are interactive and they are designed to help officials apply new knowledge and skills in practice, either through workshops and discussion, or through practical drills. You are required to complete the online, Safeguarding course, apply for a UK Athletics DBS enhanced verification and attend the Health and Safety module as part of Level 1 Award for Technical Officials (Track and Field). You can take the module at your own pace and leave to return later if required. The module has multiple-choice quizzes after each section; the first section covers generic health and safety and the second focuses on Health and Safety within each of the disciplines. You will need to score 70% across all sections to pass.
